VIII. (Intermediate) power system

VIII. (Intermediate) power system

Abstract

  • SJSU EE’s have created a solar power interface system to supply power to Superway/utilize solar energy

Introduction

  • Two mains objectives:
i. Replace batteries for 1/12 scale w/ solar cells + conducting wayside system
ii. Create solar interface system to provide power to intermediate scale model
  • We are going to make history

Technological Impact and Uniqueness of Spartan Superway

  • Pollution by cars climbing dramatically
  • Superway here to help

Project Specifications and Methodology

  • 2 different scales of SMSSV were planned for production, a 1:12 scale model and an intermediate scale model
  • 1/12th scale
i. Employs multiple pod car batteries
ii. Each pod car has a motor, a series of servos, a microcontroller, and a backup battery
iii. Energized using 3rd rail system
iv. All battery system being used instead
  • Intermediate
i. Commercial off the shelf design used

Project details

  • System converts captured solar energy to U.S grid compatible AC power
  • AC will power another multiple-output power supply
  • An array of 15 solar panels provide approximately 1 kW of peak power to a grid-tie inverter
  • Connected to utility source is a battery charger
  • Nominal 48VDC on the wayside rail will power the drive motor controller and a second 1500W inverter unit

Costs

  • Estimated cost is $1128.63

Completed and Current Goals of the Team

  • Production of 1/12th scale solar interface terminated at start of spring semester

Team Management and Performance

  • Team was highly effective and adaptable
  • Team involved in larger superway meetings
  • Group email was used as primary medium of communication

Major Challenges Faced

  • Lack of data needed to move forward with project

Conclusion

  • Things went very well
  • All hail the superway!!!
